You wanna know how much more work we still have to do?

I got this in an e-mail from a friend who is in charge of altar servers in his parish:
One of my altar servers mothers called, to say that she wants to remove her daughter from the schedule because they only go to mass when she serves and since I now require them to sign in, they no longer want to serve.  I guess that they only go to church once every 5 weeks.....

You've got to be kidding me, right?

So, the reason and only time they go to mass is to see their daughter when she is a server?

They see this as something similar to attending a child in some school's play , musical, sporting or other extracurricular event?

Perhaps next to their name in the parish directory should be CINO ( Catholic In Name Only).

That's scary.

Sad, but incredibly, incredibly true. Same thing here in AZ. We do have a long way to go.

Actually I have had parents sit in the front row to take pictures of the first time their child serves at Mass. While distracting, I can admire the pride they have in their child(ren).

Obviously, if I can I try to encourage them to not take pictures during the Mass and that we'll pose for a picture in front of the altar after the Mass.

Do these parents and other well wishers also go to Communion once every five weeks? Do the altar servers routinely receive Holy Communion?

One of my saddest experiences was seeing young people who I had helped train (if that is the right word) to serve Mass subsequently lapse altogether as they got older. I still can't quite think of what more I might have done to help them keep practising ....

I guess this is no different than the people who only come to see their kids do the readings at the monthly "Children's Mass," or to perform their [insert rock band instrument here] at the "Teen Mass."
