An homage to Father Z

In the life of a parish Priest (especially when you live alone), having the time to cook a meal is an almost unheard of treat. But, the other day, after reading another of Fr. Zuhlsdorf's culinary triumphs, I couldn't resist this:

On Sundays people should, if possible, get together for a nice meal. But after three Sunday Masses and a Corpus Christi procession, my desire for a meal is outweighed by my desire for things like a couch, The West Wing on DVD, and some air conditioning.

But still, I needed to eat, so I decided to whip up one of my favorite recipes: Un panino di burro arachidi con patate fritte e ciambelline di ciocolata which is a "Peanut butter sandwich with potato chips and chocolate donuts".

First, I undid the twist tie on some Pane Italiano.

... unscrew the lid on your peanut butter ...

... spread the peanut butter on the bread evenly ... Be sure not to let your bird feeders distract you!!! ...

To drink, I priced a fine Thé Freddo a Limone di Wawa, vintage 2010.

The finished product. Buon Appetito!

  1. Really funny. But, um, you did mean "LIVE alone" not "LOVE alone" right?!?

  2. I'm happy to see you selected the DIET Lemonade Tea. I do the same when I order a Big Mac, fries and a DIET coke!

  4. That was awesome!

If I didn't have a husband and kids to cook for, I'd be doing the exact same thing.

  5. My favorite flavor of Wawa tea. My son usually takes a few bottles with him when he returns to school in Connecticut (Fairfield U - yeah, I know, those Jesuits). The kids he goes to school with just don't get the Wawa thing - they don't know what they are missing.

  8. You are a rock star. I wish I would have thought of this. I love Fr. Z, but his food feats always smack of pride because of my own laziness.

  11. I'm impressed - you cook more than I do! The mini chocolate donuts are a nice touch representing the choco food group.

  13. Very funny! I just hope you didn't really have to eat it! If you did, then you really need to start a Casserole Crusade in your parish to help fill your fridge and freezer! :))

  18. You should have choked on your drink if you drank out of a Toronto Maple Leaf cup!!
What is that all about - aren't you in Jersey??

  19. I was wondering when the Leafs cup would be noted. I have a few souvenir cups from NHL arenas I've visited (including one from NJ's Prudential Center).

  20. I suspect this is what the novices would prepare if we weren't vigilant....
And yes, unfortunately, one of them would approve of the Toronto Maple Laughs cup.

  21. Featured on WDTPRS?? I am impressed, overjoyed and awestruck. If I were you, I would put on all of my hockey pads and hope to survive the spike in your stats. Congrats, and funny stuff.

  22. wow, yesterday I used the same bread and the same PB...but I added grape jelly! No donuts though.
and that is one of my favorite beverages. Remarkable co-inky-dink.

  23. Excellent. I have started a new speciality myself. Fromage alla George Foreman (Wheat bread with 'merican cheese, grilled on a Foreman grill). [Thanks St. Thomas Parish 6 years later still truckin along].

Fr. Weldon, as usual, is right- you are a Rock Star!

  24. Did anybody else notice the chips were the last of the leavings from the bottom of the bag?

  25. I'd love to cook like Father Z; but more often than not, my efforts match Father J. Enjoyed the post very much!

Now had it been a fourple-decker PB, THAT would have been a culinary feat. Good form, Fr. Rock Star!

  27. Loved the post! You are a cook after my own heart. Although at times "dinner" was a bag of potato chips with dip. Yum!! However being a Flyers fan I would prefer a different cup!!

  28. Ok... as a dietitian, my initial reaction to the pictures was "what the heck?!?!"... and promptly intended on leaving a Pope Benedict "truth and charity" approach to my comment... but then ... after reading how hysterical the post was, let me just say that perhaps the laughter from the post will balance out the calories and saturated fat? How's that for the practice of hope:) I will pray for priests even more than before now... lol...
